Utrecht – Recent analysis by VNLOK shows that nearly all gambling promotion on Meta platforms originates from illegal operators. Between October and December 2025, more than 95 percent of visible gambling advertisements on Facebook and Instagram were illegal. According to industry associations, this highlights the risks for consumers and underscores the need for legal operators to perform optimally in order to keep players within the regulated market.

In response, Martijn de Boer, Director of CDDN, emphasizes that efficient and seamless onboarding of new players is crucial in countering the appeal of illegal providers. “If a customer encounters a slow or cumbersome registration process, it doesn’t take much for them to choose an illegal site that promises quick access and applies less stringent checks,” De Boer explains. “It is therefore essential that legal providers make the registration process as simple as possible, without compromising compliance and consumer protection.”
